While there is not space here to discuss the nature, origins, or indeed, chronology of the crisis, it is important to stress that the crisis is truly global, affecting developed, less-developed and socialist countries (Thrift, 1986: 12). The timing and nature of the recession's impact have, however, shown considerable variation; to this the South East Asian states have been no exception.
