INTRODUCTION Bone tissue engineering is of significant importance because many serious bone injuries heal slowly and result in permanent changes in bone structure and function [I]. There are about 1 million patients with skeletal defects and injuries a year that require bone-graft reconstruction . Cell-based approaches for bone grafting that utilize scaffolds fabricated from synthetic biomaterials such as metals, ceramics, polymers and composites are promising alternatives to autogenic and allogeneic bone-grafting materials .
The ideal pore size for a bioceramic material should approximate that of bone. It has been demonstrated that microporosity (diameter < 10 pm) allows body fluid circulation whereas macroporosity (diameter 100 pm) provides a scaffold for bone-cell colonization. It was reported that BCP ceramic with an average pore size diameter ,of 565 pm (compared to those with average pore size diameter of 300 pm) and 40% macroporosity (compared to 50% macroporosity) had greater bone ingrowth . >; Biological properties: The interest of BCP concept is the equilibrium of the resorption and the bone ingrowth at the expense of the bioceramics.
