Research on Formal Operations The original empirical basis for Piaget’s theory of formal operations was psychological research by his associate Bärbel Inhelder on what came to be known as the Inhelder tasks, in which children and adolescents attempted to explain a variety of physical phenomena associated with balance scales, pendulums, and other sorts of apparatus. After the publication of this research in the classic work on formal operations (Inhelder & Piaget, 1958), researchers began attempting to replicate and extend Inhelder’s findings.

Dialectical reasoning, he proposed, draws on postformal understandings of structure, relations, context, perspective, contradiction, activity, change, and progress. Suppose, for example, an individual who believes that knowledge is innate in the genes (nativism) encounters the view that knowledge is learned from one’s environment (empiricism). It may appear that the two views contradict each other and that a choice must be made between them—they cannot both be right. A dialectical thinker, however, would consider the possibility that these two views can be synthesized to generate a perspective more defensible than either—in this case, perhaps, some sort of interactionist view.

In the realm of advanced cognition, we are each a multitude. To simplify, however, we process at no fewer than two levels. Dual processing theories are compatible with common conceptions of Piaget’s theory of formal operations as a competence theory (Overton, 1990; see Chapter 1). Deliberate application of logical norms does not replace earlier modes of functioning but rather supplements them.
