The last Pentland hill of note is Mendick Hill, southwest of West Linton. This modest hill of 451m has a pleasing conical shape when viewed from West Linton golf course at the start of the recommended walk for this week. A circuit of the hill involves an undulating walk of some seven miles, virtually all of which is on track and path, with only a short stretch on tarmac – the minor road at Garvald at the southwest end of the hill. South of Garvald is the bigger mass of Black Mount, steeper and higher at 516m but as it is enclosed by roads, I do not regard it as one of the Pentland hills.

However, I have now met Hugh Munro – not he of the eponymous list of course, but a present day resident of Penicuik.

This time I was joined by the Mountain Lamb.
