As in the psychoanalytic school, from which some of the existentialists derived, the therapist begins with a neutral listening to the patient, but the existential therapist does not, as in psychoanalysis, later try to organize what is learned into a theory. The therapist’s role is to simply understand the patient, not theorize about him.
